Course Information:
Veterinary medicine is a people-oriented profession and often times our encounters with others (clients and staff) account for some of the most stressful times in clinical practice. Understanding the psychological concepts that inform the reactions of others to us and our own reactions to them can provide insight that helps us to depersonalize interactions, suffer less, mitigate self-doubt and prevent burnout. The content of this course, which has not been previously presented in veterinary medicine, will introduce several psychological/psychoanalytic concepts to attendees so that they can engage with others in a healthier way. This course is for any practitioner or staff member who is curious about human behavior and would like ways in which to deal more effectively with others.

Please note: This course is not a substitute for individual therapy nor are the contents to be used for self-diagnosis or the evaluation of others.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • describe the various attachment styles and discuss how they might impact relationships.
  • define transference and counter-transference and be able to discuss how an understanding of them informs personal and professional encounters.
  • describe the major psychological defenses and be able to recognize them in interactions with others.
  • describe enactments and become familiar with our own need to work through previous life events.
  • describe how envy differs from guilt/remorse and how masochism may be present in our interactions with others.
  • describe projective identification and be able to identify situations in which it can occur.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists interested in understanding some of the psychological processes that are inherent in personal and professional relationships and learning to use this information to decrease interpersonal stress in our encounters with others. No prior coursework in psychology is required.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 12 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-1035218)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session July 18, 2023): What We Bring With Us: Attachment Styles and Our "Objects"
Each of us has formed an attachment style based on interactions with our earliest caregivers. In addition, we have internalized "good" and "bad" objects in our relationships with others. In this session, we will review the main attachment styles and consider how our attachment styles and internalized "objects" color our interactions with others and theirs with us.

Week 2 (Real Time Session July 25, 2023): Transference and Counter-transference: Who We Are To Each Other
Throughout our interactions we relate to others not only consciously, but unconsciously as well, based upon previous interactions. Understanding how others might perceive us (the transference) and our perceptions of others (counter-transference) is useful in all encounters and particularly those that are highly stressful and emotional.

Week 3 (Real Time Session August 1, 2023): Defense Mechanisms: How We Manage Our Anxiety
We all employ defense mechanisms in time of stress and understanding ours and others use of them can help us de-personalize particularly stressful encounters and provide a way of interacting with others in healthier ways.

Week 4 (Real Time Session August 8, 2023): Remembering, Repeating and Working Through
There are many ways to deal with previous hurts and traumas : We can consciously remember them or repress them and unconsciously repeat them in our interactions with others. In this session, we look at the ways in which we unconsciously repeat previous encounters in enactments and consider how we can work through them in a healthier manner.

Week 5 (Real Time Session August 15, 2023): Envy, Guilt, Shame and Masochism
We are often taught that envy is a negative trait that needs to be uprooted. However, understanding what we are envious of and how others might be envious of us opens possibilities for new ways of engaging with our own lives and helps in interactions with others. Shame and guilt often prevent us from fully engaging in life and typically have their roots in our early lives. We will consider how guilt and shame develop and manifest and see how a propensity to be a "helper" can come from a healthy place or be the result of underlying masochism.

Week 6 (Real Time Session August 22, 2023): Projective Identification: Giving To Others What We Feel
Projective identification comes from the work of Melanie Klein and involves the projection of parts of ourselves onto others. They, in turn, "own" those parts. In this session we will discuss how projective identification presents in relationships and how to work with it.
