Course Information:
This practical course is designed for any veterinarian interested in taking on a beekeeping client. We will identify the types of beekeeping operations and outline the differences in management styles. We will outline the major issues affecting the industry, highlighting areas where veterinarians can have a positive impact. We will then go over the explicit steps of working with beekeeping clients including setting up a valid patient client relationship and writing a VFD. Veterinarians should leave this course with confidence that they could help a beekeeping client.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • define the three categories of beekeepers in North America.
  • describe key biosecurity issues for beekeepers.
  • outline the annual schedule of American production beekeepers.
  • identify areas where veterinarians can have a positive impact on the honey bee industry.
  • outline a valid VCPR for honey bees.
  • write a veterinary feed directive for bees.
  • identify key resources for making decisions for honey bee health.

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session April 28, 2024): Issues in Beekeeping
This session is designed for veterinarians who are interested in working with beekeepers. Participants will be introduced to the beekeeping industry, and the current threats to honey bee health. We will cover the logistics of antibiotic use, as well as other ways that veterinarians can work to improve honey bee health, and how they can incorporate honey bees into their practices.

Week 2 (Real Time Session May 5, 2024): Working with the Beekeeping Client
This practical session is designed to answer questions about how you can serve the needs of beekeepers. We will cover the basics of VCPR with bees, describe when it is appropriate to write a prescription or VFD, and what resources are available to ensure you are making a good decision and your license is safe. We will go over how to write a VFD for bees and ensure that you would be comfortable taking on beekeeping clients.
