Course Information:
This course focuses on anesthesia for emergency surgery in dogs and cats. Not only does this course provide sample anesthetic protocols for emergency surgery, but it also discusses what complications to expect and how to prepare for and treat them. Case examples include foreign body, pyometra, splenectomy, C-section, GDV, and septic abdomen surgeries. There will also be a brief discussion of how to incorporate local anesthetic techniques for these patients (blind and ultrasound-guided).


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • anticipate and treat the potential anesthetic complications associated with emergency exploratory laparotomy for: foreign body, pyometra, splenectomy, C-section, GDV, and septic abdomen surgery.
  • understand anesthesia protocols for the above procedures by way of different case examples.
  • understand ways to incorporate local anesthetic techniques for the above procedures.
  • consider costs and benefits to various anesthetic protocols for the above procedures.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in small animal emergency anesthesia.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1114438)


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session June 3, 2024): A Case-Based Discussion of Anesthesia for the Emergency Small Animal Patient
This session will discuss troubleshooting of anesthetic complications, treatment of the complications, and protocols for emergency surgeries in dogs and cats.
