Course Information:
You have a patient in front of you that is less than healthy. How will you plan pre-anesthesia to minimize anesthesia risk for that patient and optimize recovery? In this course we will explore, using a body systems approach, how disease and anesthesia interact to influence your decision-making process with a focus on peri-anesthetic planning that improves anesthesia safety as well as optimizes recovery from anesthesia and surgery for your patient.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand what exactly is the peri-operative period.
  • understand pre-anesthesia evaluation and stabilization of patients.
  • understand the impact (or lack there-of) of drug selection.
  • understand the importance of peri-operative monitoring and support.
  • understand other disease specific aspects of anesthesia for these more complex conditions.
  • apply knowledge of the above for the patient with renal insufficiency.
  • understand differentials that may influence anesthesia decision making for patients with respiratory disease.
  • understand pre-anesthesia evaluation and stabilization of patients.
  • understand how to plan for recovery of patients to optimize return home.
  • understand the impact (or lack there-of) of drug selection.
  • understand the importance of peri-operative monitoring and support.
  • understand other disease specific aspects of anesthesia for these more complex conditions.
  • understand what should be done before, during and after anesthesia for patients with a heart murmur.
  • understand differentials that may influence anesthesia decision making for patients with a heart murmur.
  • understand pre-anesthesia evaluation and stabilization of patients.
  • understand the impact (or lack there-of) of drug selection.
  • understand the importance of peri-operative monitoring and support.
  • understand other disease specific aspects of anesthesia for these more complex conditions.
  • understand what should be done before anesthesia for patients with chronic liver disease or neurologic disease.
  • understand pre-anesthesia evaluation and stabilization of patients.
  • understand the impact (or lack there-of) of drug selection.
  • understand the importance of peri-operative monitoring and support.
  • understand other disease specific aspects of anesthesia for these more complex conditions.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists interested in deepening their understanding of the interactions between systemic disease and anesthesia and clinical decision-making to enhance anesthesia safety and improve outcomes for patients. It is recommended that technicians/technologists enrolling in this course have 5 years clinical anesthesia experience.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 8 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-1085790)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session October 19, 2023): Recovery from Anesthesia and Surgery
Enhanced recovery from anesthesia and surgery: it's not about the drugs. Disease example – the patient with renal insufficiency. Basics of pre-operative evaluation, planning and considerations for the perioperative period and renal insufficiency as an example of how to approach co-existing disease in your patient.

Week 2 (Real Time Session October 26, 2023): Optimizing Recovery
Anesthesia doesn’t end with extubation: optimizing recovery for patients after anesthesia and once they return to clients. Disease example – Patients with upper or lower respiratory disease. Cats and dogs with upper or lower airway disease are not the same. Patients with upper and/or lower respiratory disease will be the focus.

Week 3 (Real Time Session November 2, 2023): Heart Murmur
Enhanced recovery from anesthesia and surgery: Peri-anesthetic planning and management of cats and dogs with a heart murmur. How to manage anesthesia and perioperative care of the cat or dog with heart disease.

Week 4 (Real Time Session November 9, 2023): Liver or Endocrine (Diabetes) Disease
Enhanced recovery from anesthesia and surgery: Peri-anesthetic planning and management of the patient with liver or endocrine (diabetes) disease. What are the important things to consider when anesthetizing patients with hepatic disease or neurologic disease? We will discuss anesthetic management of patients with liver or endocrine (diabetes) disease.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook(s): There is no required textbook for this course.
