Course Information:
This course will provide a detailed discussion of chemical restraint to facilitate safe and effective handling of anxious or fractious dogs and cats. Numerous sample cases and protocols will be provided, in addition to handling tips and tricks. This course will also discuss how leaving anxiety and stress untreated negatively affects patient physiology and the problems inherent to chamber induction.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand the detrimental physiologic sequelae that occur as a result of an untreated anxious or fractious patient.
  • realize why chamber induction is inappropriate and learn pharmacologic alternatives to this technique.
  • formulate a pharmacologic plan to facilitate examinations and procedures on anxious or fractious patients.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in anesthesia and sedation for fractions/anxious patients.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1009828)

Week 1 (Real Time Session August 28, 2023): Sedation and Anesthesia in Fractious Patients

This session will focus on chemical restraint for anxious or fractious dogs and cats. Alternative handling techniques and the physiologic implications of anxiety and stress will also be covered.
