Dr. Hanie, the former department chair of the veterinary medical technology program at Gaston College, Dallas, North Carolina has definitely developed this book with the veterinary technician student in mind. Not only does she explain procedures, she gives enough background to help the student understand some of the "why" as well as the "what". In her preface Dr. Hanie describes this book as one born partially out of frustration. As an instructor she was discouraged by the difficulties she encountered finding a general and practical text that focused strictly on large animals. Her intention with this book was to produce a clinically oriented, large animal reference that would help the veterinary technician become a strong contributor to the veterinary health care team. Veterinarians or technicians experienced in the large animal field may be seeking a more detailed or extensive text; however, this book will prove an excellent starting point for both the veterinary technician student and those new to large animal practice.
The book is comprised of three sections; each focusing on one the three most common species encountered in large animal practice: equine, ruminants and swine. The first chapter comprises about half of the book and is dedicated to procedures common to the horse; the second half of the book is split between ruminants and swine. Following guidelines set by the CVTEA Manual of Accreditation for Veterinary Technology Programs, each section works through a logical sequence of common procedures that one would expect to encounter in large animal practice. Starting each section with admission and history taking; seven hundred and eleven clear, primarily color illustrations help describe basic restraint, medicating, diagnostic sampling, external coaptation, imaging, surgery, anesthesia, fluid therapy, neonatal care, and more; ending with euthanasia and necropsy techniques for each species.
Large Animal Clinical Procedures features a thirty page photo appendix of common large animal equipment. Unfortunately under the, "needle holders and scissors", section only scissors are depicted; a small oversight. Another feature readers will appreciate is the glossary of common, colloquial and lay terminology, especially when they first encounter "dingleberries". Then when the reader is ready for more, they are directed to an extensive list of reputable, freely available web links. These sites contain a wealth of information covering the three groups discussed in the text as well as a number of other species technicians and students may find out on the farm.
Delivering exactly what the title promises, Large Animal Clinical Procedures will prove a valuable addition to the library of veterinary technology students and those seeking to enter large animal practice.
