This landmark book of ophthalmology (second, revised and expanded edition 2007), has long been a popular reference in Europe and the USA. First printed in 1996, this latest edition brings all of the most recent developments into focus. The past ten years have seen amazing developments in ophthalmology, as well as in new drugs and medications.
Eye problems are frequent in dogs and cats, and this book goes into detail in the diagnostics and treatment of those problems that are seen in the veterinary practice. The most common ocular problems receive the most attention. Priority is also given for ophthalmic emergencies.
Practical tips for effective diagnoses make this an asset in the veterinary practice. This book encourages and helps equip a practitioner to attempt treatment of veterinary ophthalmologic cases, yet clearly shows the therapeutic limits faced by the non-specialist. Description includes preliminary measures that can be taken before referral, as well as potential professional errors.
The drawings are excellent and detailed, the photos are descriptive and of good quality. The photos of ophthalmic disease illustrate a wide variety of conditions and are bright and clear. Photos of problems in dogs, cats, and horses are numerous (I would like to thank that greyhound who was used to demo many techniques and treatments. He seemed very patient). Drawings are used to illustrate repair techniques in a variety of injuries, including such side-issues as the removal of nasal folds in short-faced dogs.
Each chapter begins with an introduction to specific anatomy and physiology of the eye and supporting structures, noting pathogenesis, etiology, clinical course, and therapy. Each condition has photos and drawings to clarify the problem and treatment. I even found a photo of a budgerigar with a lipoma of the lower eyelid. Before and after photos show successful surgeries on such tough conditions as a sarcoid on an eyelid.
The important aspect of this book is its relevance to everyday practice. I would recommend it for every veterinary hospital.
