This second edition now includes information on small mammals, birds, and fish. Intended primarily for technicians, students, and animal care personnel, the book gives the basics of biology and care of these animals. There is also a short chapter outlining the progression of animal welfare laws in the UK, beginning with the formation of the ASPCA in 1824. A good history, since there is so much interest currently in animal welfare.
Drawings illustrate the basic body systems and functions, with some photos illustrating a variety of things (how to restrain a cat, the appropriate dishes for dogs and cats, cages for small pets, etc.). The new section on small mammals, birds, and fish is short, and far from complete, but all of the information is good and up-to-date with current protocols.
The book is a good overview of the essential points in animal nursing and care. I would suggest having a copy in the clinic for new technicians and assistants (perhaps even for kennel help). If you are a student, it is probably not as essential as a traditional textbook, but would still be an excellent adjunct to your required reading.
