This new publication is a beautiful bit of work. Oversized (13.5 x 9.75"), the illustrations are detailed and well done. Each illustration is accompanied by a detailed chart and markings relate to each point of the drawing. Additional notes link each part of the anatomy to its neighbor and describe the connection. The section on musculature describes the point of origin of each muscle, its function, innervation, and terminus.
The text is primarily physiology, describing each illustrated part, its attachments, and structure. The reader is assumed to know the function of each part beforehand; this book is strictly anatomy. Some comparisons are made as to the differences between bovine structures and like structures of other species. The text is clean, uncluttered, and easy to follow.
The anatomical aspects of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) are discussed for postmortem identification. The etiology and pathology of the disease are also discussed.
There are eight chapters, with 48 subsections, plus another chapter of Special Anatomy, with three subsections. The index is extensive, as is the section of references.
As well as being an excellent reference for the clinician, this would be an excellent book to use to show anatomy to the livestock owner. I recommend it for anyone currently in a bovine practice.
