This book is focused primarily on horses and cattle; the chapter on sheep and goats is combined, and the chapters on dogs and cats are less extensive, but adequate. This book is filled with photos of ultrasonographic views, some accompanied by photos of the actual exteriorized structure next to the view, for comparison. There are some drawings showing angles of view for various scans. In some cases, endoscopic views of the structures are side-by-side with the sonographic views. These are positioned to match the two techniques, and are excellent for comparisons.

The photos are helpful, but no amount of photos will likely reproduce exactly what you are seeing in real time. However, the sheer number of photos may provide adequate insight into reading the films or screen views. The views of assorted cysts, tumors, and other normal and abnormal structures are clear and well described by the text and marking arrows. I would say, however, that this book would be most helpful after you have had some serious CE on ultrasonography techniques.

The book was revised in 2004, so the information is current.

The reproductive information, growth rate of follicles, ovarian tumors, etc., is thorough. The information on settings and on actual use of the equipment is instructive. Drawings are included, to direct the radiographer to the correct views. The presence of multiple follicles after induced superovulation in a cow (for AI) are clearly visualized and identified. This aspect of ultrasonography will most certainly be more and more utilized in the years to come.

The chapters are arranged by species, and charts of fetal growth, positioning, depth settings, and angles are included.
