Fundamentals Of Veterinary Ophthalmology is a teaching companion for clinicians and students. Before the chapters begin, the reader will find a page of guidelines for referrals - a helpful primer for clinicians who are unsure of when to refer. Next is a series of excellent color photos of various ophthalmologic conditions. These are the only color illustrations in the book.
The book opens with a chapter on the structure and function of the eye. It's followed by a chapter on development and congenital abnormalities. Subsequent chapters cover ocular pharmacology and therapeutics, the general pathology of the eye, basic diagnostic techniques, and the principles of ophthalmic surgery. The chapters on physiology include eyelids, conjunctiva, third eyelid, the lacrimal system, the cornea and sclera, and the uvea. The chapter on glaucoma interrupts the flow of physiology, but is excellent. The chapters on the lens, vitreous, retina, neuro-ophthalmology, the orbit, systemic diseases, ocular emergencies, differential diagnoses, breed disposition to eye disorders, and equipment for an ocular practice complete the book.
The book is filled with illustrations, radiographs, superb pencil renderings, photos, and EM photography. This 640 page, soft cover book will easily lie flat for hands-free reference. This book should be on every veterinary library shelf, whether the vet refers or treats ophthalmology cases. The book is easy to reference, and amazing in its detail and scope.
