If you use this book to only look up a specific problem and to find the cure, you will miss many of the most interesting and informative areas. The presenting situations, with the explanations of why the behaviors occurred and the remedies to try, are very useful, but you would miss the structure behind the recommendations -- the preparatory chapters leading into the instructive text.

The author is not likely to use drug therapy, unless it is a last-resort tactic. He is a psychotherapist, not a veterinarian or physician, so his recommendations on drug use are based on other people's ideas. His first choices for treatment tend to be behavior modification techniques.

His understanding and logic on the development of animal behavior is interesting. Coupling this with the interrelationships between owners and their pets is key to solving the problem. His recommendations reflect correct pack behavior etiquette and common sense.

As with most books published in England, some extrapolation of drugs and dosages may be necessary, but that is not a problem since there is not a big push in this volume to resort to drugs.

Much of this book deals with aggression, but there are other behavior problems presented in a variety of scenarios, and their "cures" are well thought-out. My test was to study the behavior problems that I am most familiar with (my own animals, now and in the past) and see what he had to say. I was pleased with the comments on these issues and impressed with his logic.

On the other hand, some of his recommendations could prove disastrous (letting the dogs duke it out themselves, even small dog vs. large dog confrontations). For this reason, I suggest that you not read aloud to the owner if you aren't familiar with his comments. True, some small dogs will give up when they find they have initiated a fight with a much larger and stronger dog, but I am sure that the client would not appreciate the painful lesson of an injured or dead pet. I am sure that he is right, but I would rather protect the dog from making such a stupid decision. There's no reason to permit your dog to be killed or injured just to prove a point.

This book has a definite bias toward dogs. Pages 67 through 307 relate to dogs, while pages 313 to 376 deal with cats. Considering that cats will soon outnumber dogs as house pets (if they don't already) and considering the number of cat behavior problems, this speaks volumes about our (or the author's) understanding of training cats and behavior modification. Inappropriate elimination is given good coverage, as is Fear and Aggression. Following that is Miscellaneous Behavior Problems; coverage of this takes only the last 20 or so pages.

The book is good. I have been a student of behavior for many years, and find some of this information to be enlightening. Most of all, I appreciate the flat logic of his writing. Cat lovers will not be as happy as will dog lovers. I do recommend the book and think that it will be a valuable addition to the clinic library -- especially if you see a lot of dogs.
