Treatment and fixation of any fracture is largely dictated by the nature of the fracture. There are a number of techniques that could be used, and these authors present a variety of possibilities using external fixation. The topics are: Basics of External Fixation; Deciding When to Use External Fixation; Preoperative Care; Fracture Reduction; Placement of Pins; The Securos External Fixation System; The IMEX-SK External Fixation System; The Acrylic Pin External Fixator System; Evaluation of Postoperative Radiographs; Bandaging and Aftercare; Recheck Examinations and Complications.
The book is well illustrated with drawings, diagrams, and MANY photos. The chapters cover actual cases in chronological order -- through treatment selection, preoperative care, fracture reduction, pin placement, postoperative evaluation, and follow-up. Part I concludes with a review of complications. Part II is a selection of case studies, selected to cover a range of fracture types and fixator systems.
The authors' follow-up evaluations range from daily to 3-4 weeks between visits.
The chapters are also separated by anatomy. (The humerus, tibia, radius/ulna, and femur all have separate chapters.) A wide variety of breaks are illustrated, both with radiographs and with photos of cadaver bone examples. Important topics such as pin pullout, premature pin loosening, pin breakage, and catastrophic frame failure are discussed. There are enough examples of fracture repair illustrated that you would probably find repair instruction for the fracture you are looking at in your exam room.
The illustrations take you from surgery and placement, to cadaver examples, to radiographs of actual fractures showing pin placement and the healing progress. The information is so thorough that I believe you would want to refer to this book with every fracture case presented to you.
This is a book you will want in your small animal library. You will very likely use it often.
