If you follow the VIN message boards to any extent, you can't help but notice that there are many clinicians who are remodeling, building, or moving -- or contemplating such actions. Planning and building/renovating is a complex process filled with problems.

Just skimming through this book, I found some preliminary sketches of clinics that some people would sell their grandmother to own. There are also plans that illustrate how to utilize a small space to maximum potential.

The chapters are: Planning Needs; The Design Team; Design Scope and Fees; The Design Elements; The Production Documents; Public Affairs; The Building of the Practice Team and Other Mega-Ideas; and The Expanded Facility Planning Process. The book describes the process of creating a new building or altering an existing one, from conception to construction. One helpful feature is that the author helps establish common understanding between the veterinarians, practice managers, architects, and engineers.

The book is a pre-construction self-training and orientation text. Example of flow diagrams and floor plans are creative and innovative. Eight architects contributed to this volume. There are also three appendices by veterinary-specific consultants.

Appendices discuss how to evaluate your clinic's value for the benefit of lenders; a feasibility review; charts of 2002 building costs; charts on how to extrapolate costs based on your geographical area; patient care considerations in the design and construction process; outpatient-inpatient flow; and specialty and emergency facility needs.

I cannot imagine any facet of a building or remodeling venture that isn't discussed here. I would not begin such a project without this book.
