For more than twenty years, Slauson-Cooper has been the book of choice in general veterinary pathology. Now totally revised and updated, this new third edition continues to focus on recent advances in the understanding of the mechanisms of how animals become sick. This book's primary function is to introduce students to disease concepts inherent in clinical medicine through the study of pathogenic mechanisms. Even though the science of pathology is continually changing, the basics remain the same. Disease is still caused by the various forms of microbes and toxins, but how the disease occurs continues to fascinate. This book addresses those concerns.
The chapters cover Pathology—The Study Of Disease; Disease At The Cellular Level; Disturbances Of Blood Flow And Circulation; Inflammation And Repair Of Tissue; Immunopathology; Disorders Of Cell Growth And Cancer Biology; and The Nature And Causes Of Disease: Interactions of Host, Pathogen, And Environment.
Each chapter has an outline preface of the text. There are numerous photographs and drawings to assist the reader. Following each chapter is an extensive list of recommended reading and the index at the end of the book is extensive and thorough. The book has a 2002 copyright, and the information contained is very up-to-date. The book is well-written, and - aside from being a textbook - makes interesting reading on its own. Obviously, this book is for the student, but every veterinarian who used the last (1990) edition should have this updated book on the shelf. Veterinary pathology has progressed so far and so rapidly in the past ten years that to not have this information puts the average clinician at risk of falling behind.
