Small Animal Oncology

This text is a concise and practical guide to diagnosis and treatment of the more common tumors in dogs and cats. It is intended as a ready reference for small animal veterinarians and veterinary students. The whole breadth of cancer medicine is covered, including epidemiology, etiology, pathology, and presentation of any chosen malignancy.

The book is well illustrated with photos, plus a few drawings are added to the text. Different aspects of anatomy are covered separately, with a list of cancers that affect those areas and systems.

The book begins with pathogenesis and tumor biology, diagnosis and staging, and treatment options. Following the sections on the basics of cancer, the various body areas - and the cancers that affect them - are described. Skin, soft tissues, head and neck, gastrointestinal, respiratory, genital tract, mammary system, nervous system, endocrine system, the eye and orbit, and miscellaneous tumors are thoroughly discussed along with treatments, surgery, and prognoses. Disappointingly, not included are guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, or other small mammals. The context is strictly dog and cat, although I am sure that many of the cancers and conditions could be extrapolated for these other species. Treatments may differ greatly, however, so this book's usefulness for small mammals other than dogs and cats is limited.

There is a glossary of drugs and dosages included in the text; also included is a general reading list. The book is well indexed.

Every veterinarian who treats dogs and cats should have this book.
