This is first a workbook for veterinary students. As with all student texts, the information is up-to-date and useful as a brush-up text for practicing clinicians. The text is instructive, current, and concise, and is accompanied by tables and instructional figures, with multiple choice questions following each chapter. There is an overview preceding each chapter as well.
The authors have taken care in the preparation of this book to be clear and concise in the discussion of basic biochemistry. The authors state that they feel that it is important to understand the relationship between the cellular level activity and the physiological processes in the whole animal. They appear to have achieved that goal with this text.
The sections are: Amino Acid and Protein Metabolism; Nucleotide and Nucleic Acid Metabolism; Carbohydrate and Heme Metabolism; Vitamins and Trace Elements; Lipid Metabolism; Intermediary Metabolism; and Acid-Base Balance. There are 94 chapters. Also included is a list of Chemical Abbreviations, References, and an excellent Index.
The text contains lots of tables and illustrations of the chemical pathways in the systems. I would recommend this book for veterinary students. Veterinarians may want to have a copy to update their libraries.
