Neurological disorders are sometimes difficult to spot and diagnose. Identifying a neurologic lesion depends on many factors, and the authors skillfully present a wide range of choices and possibilities. This book walks you through the maze of diagnostics in a logical progression. The section on history and examination is very thorough, and the drawings that illustrate various neurological signs are well done and descriptive. The case histories presented are valuable and selected for their variety.
The chapter on Localization of Lesions in the Nervous System is a checklist to assist the clinician in narrowing down a diagnosis.
Several chapters are dedicated to how to evaluate an animal exhibiting specific signs. There are numerous charts and illustrations, treatment protocols, and examples (with assessments of the cases). The various body systems are classified for easy reference, and each chapter ends with a list of references and further reading. Diseases specific to certain breeds of animals (including dogs, cats, and large animals) are covered. There is an excellent chapter on Tetraparesis, Hemiparesis, and Ataxia, with radiographs and drawings of lesions and discussions of diagnoses and treatments.
The chapter on pain is brief, but filled with essential information on pain recognition and treatment. It displays the analgesic agents for dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and swine in charts.
The book has instructor materials available for college use. It is useful both for veterinary students and for practicing veterinarians.
