This e-Book version of Dr. Morgan's formulary, like the spiral bound paperback, is compiled for, and serves as a companion to, the fourth edition of the Handbook of Small Animal Practice (Saunders, 2002). If you are a fan of Dr. Morgan's Handbook, or if you are looking for a very simple dog/cat formulary, this one may be for you.

The handbook includes a dog/cat formulary of approximately 500 drugs (listed alphabetically by brand name, generic name, and drug class), a guide to treatment abbreviations, and chapter references to the parent book. A metric conversion program is included, but it requires an upgrade of the MobiPocket reader program included with the software (MobiPocket Pro).

Each drug entry includes the drug name (generic and brand), purpose or use, a list of chapters in Dr. Morgan's Handbook where the drug is mentioned (this listing is chapter number only, and does not include page reference) and dosage (prefixed with dog or cat). Finding drugs and doses is easy. The first page has links to the generic name, brand name, and drug class indexes. Each of these may be searched by paging through the list or by spelling out one or more letters.

This e-book runs on MobiPocket Reader. The reader is compatible with Palm OS 3.5 and above, Pocket PC, Windows CE (2.0 and above), and Casio BE-300 handheld devices. The program requires 1.0 MB free memory (for reader and ebook) on computer and handheld, Windows 95 and above, an Internet connection (Internet Explorer 5.0 minimum), Palm desktop, ActiveSync, or PC Connect for Cassiopeia PDA.

MobiPocket SA (http://www.MobiPocket.com) is a French company incorporated in March, 2000. Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc. (http://www.Franklin.com) is its major shareholder. The reader enables secured distribution of electronic text across all handheld and phone operating systems (Windows CE, Palm OS, and Psion). This reader is secured utilizing encryption of the e-book and unique signature (a time stamp added to each book at the time of purchase) to prohibit sharing of texts. This is certain to make it a popular platform for publishers. The reader comes packaged with MobiPocket Web Companion, an automated content extraction tool dedicated to press articles.

I found the MobiPocket reader ponderous, requiring identifier numbers for both PC and handheld. These numbers are obtained from the MobiPocket web site. Further, much like AvantGo, but not as smoothly, MobiPocket constantly prompts for updates. I found this to be true even when I chose NOT to subscribe to any news service.

System requirements: Computer: Windows 95 or above with an Internet connection. Palm Desktop, Active Sync, or PC Connect for Cassiopea. PDA: Palm OS (3.5 and above), Windows DE (2.0 and above), or Pocket PC on your PDA. Memory: PDA memory requirements 2.5 MB.

This CD-ROM comes with installation instructions and information on easy use.

Key features are: Need-to-know information on approximately 500 generic drugs; a handy guide to long treatment abbreviations and units; and a comprehensive drug formulary that includes the drug use and dosage, an alphabetical listing of drugs by brand name, generic name, and drug class.
