This book is designed to assist those practitioners who are presented with ocular emergencies, but have had little training in veterinary ophthalmology and ocular emergencies.
This book will not do away with the need to refer, but should help the clinician through the presentation and comfort of the patient, assist with some treatments to resolution, or stabilize the patient for referral. In fact, the author recommends referral, as many cases result in ocular pain or blindness and a second opinion is always of value.
This text is directed toward handling the emergency. The problem-based first section takes the reader from proper equipment, to examination and diagnosis, to treatment (therapy designed to make the patient comfortable and/or effect a cure). Surgeries are illustrated with drawings, and point up the importance of investing in some ocular equipment. The excellent drawings illustrate some techniques that would not be possible to show in photos.
The writing style is conversational, and -- for some -- may be easier to read than the usual format. Some readers might prefer a more scientific style. This book is not intended to replace a full ocular text, which should be available as well, but to ease the emergency situation. Ocular disease and injury represents pain in many cases, as well as the potential for loss of eyesight and serious life changes for the patient.
