This small book is totally restricted to wounds. Considering that most horses dedicate their lives to injuring themselves, it is certainly a book to keep handy. Equine injuries are rarely minimal, and those addressed in this book are an education on their own. The information is well-presented and thorough. Each section walks you through the topic, providing a quality discussion of the subject. For example, the section on grafts discusses the use and application of free grafts, full thickness grafts, tunnel grafts, and punch grafts. The other chapters and topics are likewise elaborated, easy to follow, and truly informative.

It is well illustrated with color photographs and color drawings.

Section 1 - Principles and Practice. Chapter 1 is really only an introduction. Chapter 2 begins the real text, and addresses the types of wounds: Graze/Abrasion/Erosion; Bruising; Hematoma; Contusion; Puncture Wound; Incised Wound; Laceration; Complicated Wound; and Burns. Each description explains the term, gives a general treatment method, and a prognosis. Chapter 3 covers Pathophysiology of Wound Healing. Several types of wounds are illustrated, as well as their progression into healing.

Section 2 - Healing Delay. Chapter 4 covers Factors That Delay Healing: Infection/Infestation; Movement; Foreign Body; Necrotic Tissue; Altered Local pH; Paucity of Blood Supply; Poor or Impaired Oxygen Supply; Poor Nutritional and Health Status (old or debilitated horses); Local Factors; Iatrogenic Factors; Genetic Factors; and Cell Transformation.

Section 3 - Wound Management. Chapter 5 covers General Principles of Wound Management: Owner Protocol for Wound Management; Protocol for Veterinary Attention; Minimizing the Potential Problem of a Wound; and Summary. Chapter 6 covers Basic Wound Management: History; Restraint; Initial Examination; Wound Lavage (a thorough description of the various methods and their expected results); Skin Wound Repair; Bandages, Dressings, and Dressing Techniques; Management of Wound Exudate; and Management of Granulation Tissue. Chapter 7 covers Skin Grafting: Classification of Grafts; Pedicle Graft; Free Grafts; Clinicopathological Consequences of Grafting; and Graft Take and Causes of Failure. Chapter 8 covers Dealing with Scar Tissue: Types of Scar; Limiting the Severity of Scarring; and Management of Scar Tissue.

Section 4 - Management of Complicated Wounds. Chapter 9 covers Complicated Wounds: Skin Lacerations with Deficits or Degloving; Wounds Involving Muscle Damage; Wounds Involving Synovial Structures; Wounds with Exposed Bone; Eyelid Injuries; Eye Injuries; Wounds Involving the Mouth, Tongue, and Jaws; Wounds Involving Nerve Damage; Wounds Involving Cranial Damage; Wounds Involving Hoof Capsule and Coronary Band; Wounds Involving Open Body Cavities; and Wounds Involving Major Blood Vessels. Chapter 10 covers The Future of Wound Management.

Giving the chapters and headings is not nearly enough to describe the content of this volume. The information is concise and well presented. Each topic is thoroughly examined and, while somewhat abbreviated, appears to be sufficient to get the job done.
