Dermatology is a complicated subject that is rarely covered from a veterinary technician's perspective. Technicians are often left with the client to explain treatments and care of the patient, but until now there have been no texts written specifically to meet their needs. Veterinary Dermatology fills this gap. From simple identification of parasites through client advice and guidelines for effective clinical examination, Frances Gaudiano has provided a comprehensive guide for the veterinary technician. This is a book that the technician can share with the client during the instructional session, to help the client better understand treatment. The opening chapters will also give the tech a good lesson in skin anatomy and structure.
Cases are presented to illustrate presentation and treatment of each type of infection or infestation. The accompanying photos are relevant and, in most instances, show worst-case scenarios. Chapters are separated by a color code on the top of the page and the case studies are on pages in a matching color. The cases are mostly in dogs, with a few pages given to ferrets, guinea pigs, and other exotics. I didn't find any illustrations of dermatological problems in cats.
This book is intended for veterinary technicians, but veterinarians should also familiarize themselves with this text to be sure that what the technicians learn is in keeping with how the veterinarian is treating the case. Besides, it never hurts to brush up on the latest medications and techniques.
