Trends in Emerging Viral Infections of Swine

Pork producers continually strive for improvements in genetics, husbandry, and animal health with the goal of providing safe, wholesome, and useful products to consumers and society. Recent significant developments in swine health and on emerging diseases seem to place us at a point in history where previously unrecognized viral agents are being discovered, while old ones are reasserting their presence or expanding their geographical range.

With this volume, we are looking at the latest in a series of developments, and examining the most recent studies of these emerging and expanding diseases. Important topics such as Nipahvirus, Menanglevirus, and porcine circovirus, as well as swine fever, are addressed.

The chapters in this book are presented in a format that gives each paper a stand-alone quality. The progression of topics is logical, beginning with the transmission of viruses, the role of international agencies in the control of contagious animal diseases, and the social impact of disease control and eradication programs. The book covers recent outbreaks and basic and applied research, as well as epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention and control.

The book is divided into ten major headings: Introduction, Swine Influenza Virus, Porcine Paramyxoviruses, African Swine Fever Virus, Classical Swine Fever Virus, Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Swine Vesicular Disease Viruses, Porcine Herpesviruses, Arboviral Infections, Porcine Circovirus, and Porcine Nidoviruses. Within each of these headings are papers by various authors. The format is similar to a peer-reviewed journal, with a summary and an introduction followed by the body of the paper, and ending with a discussion or conclusion and references. There are liberal tables and charts, but a small number of photos. More than 70 internationally recognized experts working actively in this field have combined their work to make up this excellent reference.

This book is for the dedicated swine veterinarian or researcher. The book bears a 2002 publication date, so the value is in the current information.
