As the authors state, the third edition is a complete revision of the second edition.

This book provides complete, current information on pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of endocrine, metabolic, and reproductive diseases in dogs and cats. It also discusses the importance of testing procedures in endocrine and reproductive diseases, as well as cost-effective and expedient diagnostic protocols.

The book is divided into endocrine and reproduction disorders. Two chapters have been added to the endocrine section: Feline Hyperadrenocorticsm and Feline Diabetes Mellitus. These chapters represent the acceptance that cats are not small dogs and that information specific to cats is important.

According to the preface, "The goal of the third edition of our textbook on canine and feline endocrinology and reproduction is similar to that of the first two editions: to provide veterinarians with a concise but complete source of information pathophysiology, clinical signs, diagnosis, and treatment of endocrine, metabolic, and reproductive disorders in dogs and cats." The authors have done an excellent job accomplishing that goal. As described in the title, the book is divided into two main sections, endocrinology and reproduction. The endocrinology part contains 18 chapters that provide a thorough discussion on all aspects of endocrine disease.

The reproduction section covers all aspects of dog and cat reproduction, however it is more heavily weighted towards canines. This is probably due to more data available for canines and the need for more veterinary intervention in dogs, as compared to cats. In addition, when problems are similar between the species, the authors refer you to the appropriate chapter in the canine section.

I would highly recommend this book for all small animal practitioners and veterinary students. In particular, this book would be of interest to practitioners and students who want to obtain a greater understanding of complex endocrine and reproductive problems. The chapters include tables, graphs, protocols, algorithms, and illustrations. The illustrations are black and white, but are of good quality, and are pertinent to the topics. Each chapter is extensively referenced and up to date.

In the couple of months I have had this book, it has become my preferred reference for endocrine cases. Finding the time to read the extensive chapters is challenging, but worth it.
