This is a beautiful book in every way. First, the book is arranged in an orderly manner, well illustrated, and thorough. It is more than an update of the first edition; significant new information has been added to the text. Five new chapters on endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery have been added. The neurosurgery sections have been expanded, incorporating new chapters on surgery of the brain and peripheral nerves. Many new procedures, or procedures that were rarely used at the time of the first edition, are described. There are several new sections on arthroscopy in orthopedics, a procedure that is rapidly becoming a modality of choice in the treatment of many complex joint problems.

There are considerably more color illustrations in this edition, both medical illustrations and photos. The NOTE boxes, which highlight concerns, key concepts, and precautions, have been expanded. There are also more tables that provide antibiotic, anesthetic, and analgesic protocols. Also, the tables are color-coded in this latest edition.

The book is 44 chapters organized into five parts. The first ten chapters (Part One) were written with an eye toward the veterinary student. Part Two is the new section on endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery techniques. Parts Three, Four, and Five contain information on soft-tissue surgery and neurosurgery. Within the chapters, there are sections detailing general principles and a section on specific diseases. The general principles and techniques portion begins with definitions of procedures and terms relevant to the particular organ system. Next are sections detailing information on preoperative and anesthetic concerns. Following is a discussion on antibiotic use and a brief description of pertinent anatomy. Surgical techniques that are applicable to a number of diseases are also detailed. However, if a technique is specific to a particular disease, that technique will be described with the specific disease. Anesthetic protocols are described within each specific disease section.

Each chapter is broken down into relevant headings, walking the reader step by step through definitions, preoperative concerns, anesthetics, antibiotics, anatomy, techniques, wound healing, suture materials, diseases, diagnoses, medical management, and much more. Instead of a list of references following each chapter, the reader will find a list of recommended reading and/or selected abstracts of recent manuscripts or proceedings. The authors have tried to avoid using research information not yet proven to have clinical relevance.
