Antimicrobial Therapy

This is the third edition of this book, with twenty-one expert contributors and thirty-four chapters. The revision, due in part to the crisis of antibiotic resistance in human medicine, is an extensive reexamination of the practice of using feed antibiotics as growth promoters and disease prophylactics in animals. Two new chapters were added: The Use of Antimicrobial Drugs in Aquaculture; and Regulation of Antibiotic Use in Animals.

The international origins of the editors and authors illustrate the global implications and concern for the fast-emerging problem of antibiotic resistance. The editors represent Zimbabwe (Baggot), Canada (Prescott), and the US (Walker). Authors are also included from the US, Australia, the UK, and the Netherlands.

Publication of the book was supported by a generous donation from Pfizer, Inc. Animal Health Group, New York, and by additional donations from Fort Dodge Animal Health, Overland Park, Kansas. Dr. Prescott also acknowledges Ontario Veterinary College for monetary support through the Bull Fund.

The opening chapter on Antimicrobial Drug Action and Interaction is an excellent primer on antibiotics and their classes. The basics are explained in such a way as to enable the reader to apply the principles to developing antibiotics and emerging diseases. The book details the available antibiotics and their expected efficacy against common diseases. Antifungals are included in this book, as well as antiviral chemotherapy.

A current concern with antibiotics is inappropriate use, leading to the development of antibiotic-resistant diseases, a huge problem for human and animal medicine. This book details the correct use of antibiotics, expected results, special considerations, species requirements, safety concerns, and other focused topics. Some of these are: Drug Disposition and Dosage in Neonatal Animals, Antimicrobial Prophylaxis in Nonsurgical Patients, Mechanisms of Renal Excretion, Dose Modification, and Administration Routes.

Numerous table and charts further illustrate topics within the chapters, adding to the use and value of this book.

The chapter on antibiotic susceptibility testing discusses how laboratory results and reports are not always clear and how the clinician may have the results; yet not know how to apply treatment. Interpretation of lab results is examined and treatment/dosing is discussed. In the chapter following, antimicrobial drug resistance is addressed.

The book discusses the problem from the point of view of disease treatment, antibiotic efficacy, and species differentiation in both animal species and bacterial species. Identification of bacteria species and the dosing requirements for each animal species are examined in detail.

Antibiotic activity, antibiotic resistance, pharmacokinetic properties, toxicity and side effects, drug interactions, administration and dosage, and clinical applications are presented in logical sequence for each animal and disease.

The thirty-four chapters are interesting reading and each is important in what it lends to this book. While antimicrobial therapy is not my particular field of interest, I found this book compelling in its scope of investigation and information regarding antibiotics.

I would recommend this book for every clinician or researcher. It will prove to be a valuable addition to any veterinary library.
