I had been anxiously awaiting the publication of this text, having been kept informed of the progress by my many esteemed colleagues who have contributed chapters; and after the wait I’m pleased to report that this is a wonderful text that does not disappoint!
From the powerful first chapter Advancing Veterinary Pain Management into a New Era to the multiple Appendixes offering case studies, drug dosages and calculation samples, this text provides a wide range of information encompassing pain management for a variety of species.
Chapters address various pain management modalities including Locoregional Analgesia, Surgical Pain Management, Analgesia for Emergency and Critical Care Patients as well as Chronic Pain Management and End of Life Care. Along with our typical companion animals, pain recognition and treatment of other species such as livestock, camelids, exotic animals, and zoo and wildlife species is also addressed.
Other topics of pain management include chapters on Pain Management Careers for Veterinary Technicians and Nurses, a well written chapter on the Physiology of Pain, an important chapter on Nutritional Considerations for Pain Management in Dogs and Cats and chapters on Alternative Therapies and Physical Rehabilitation.
The book has many color photos, charts and diagrams that help to further illustrate the points in the text.
This is a textbook that anyone in the veterinary field will find useful. Seasoned technicians, veterinarians and students will find much useful information contained within the well organized chapters. It is a book that is a recommended addition for any hospital library.
