This two-volume book is arranged in a novel manner, with the first volume covering the basics of surgical biology, methods, and postoperative care, neurosurgery and orthopedics. Volume two covers soft tissue surgery, organized by body system.

The surgical procedures contain far more detail than most books on surgery, and with 151 contributors and an accompanying website, will give the clinician an edge on surgery not available from other books.

Page xxiii starts the reader out with the usual History of Surgery and is intended to bring the reader up-to-date on veterinary surgery through the ages. This history lesson, while interesting, seems to be a prerequisite section for almost all veterinary books.

The first few chapters are on the biology of surgery, inflammation responses, molecular and cellular biology, genomics, mutations, molecular cloning, and text exploring the system down to the cellular level.

This is definitely a text that should be studied prior to a leap into a strictly surgical life. There are areas in this book that were probably not addressed if you graduated more than ten years ago, at least, not in such depth. (See, for instance, chapter 3, sub- heading: Biomarkers in Clinical Medicine). The section on Instrument and Tissue Handling may be old news to the experienced surgeon, but considering the importance of tissue preservation in forensic and laboratory study, this is valuable information.

This volume is well illustrated with photos, imaging views, drawings, and charts. The section on orthopedics explains surgery using multiple formats for illustration. The dentistry section may provide information up to and perhaps beyond normal dentistry books.

There are 14 sections in the 2 volumes.

Volume one: 1. Surgical Biology; 2. Surgical Methods and Postoperative Care; 3. Neurosurgery; 4. Musculoskeletal System.

Volume two, Soft Tissue Surgery, consists of: 5. Skin and Reconstruction, 6. Abdomen; 7. Digestive System; 8. Respiratory System; 9. Thorax; 10. Cardiovascular System; 11. Urogenital System; 12. Endocrine System; 13. Ear; 14. Eye.

This volume starts out with some of the basics of surgery (i.e.) Primary Wound Closure; Tension Relieving Techniques; although the chapter on Skin Grafts has excellent illustrations (photos) of procedures dealing with complicated surfaces and structures. There is interesting information on mucosal repairs, nasal and buccal grafts.

Each chapter on a specific system begins with anatomy, attachments, as well as blood supply and general physiology. Given this anatomy session, the remainder of the text is instructional and educational. Postoperative expectations, imaging use, antibiotics, and outcome are typical areas, although not all systems are laid out alike.

There are many side issues, depending on the system. A thorough read would be of benefit for any clinician preparing for a surgery, if only to find out what this book can offer. There may, at this date, be newer books on surgery, but few may have the detail of this volume.

The individual surgeries are illustrated with both photos and accompanying drawings to provide landmarks.

The 82 page Index is at the back of Volume 2 and includes volumes 1 and 2. The book easily lays flat and sections are identified by colors on the upper edges of the pages.

The accompanying website is identified inside of volume 1 and the pass code to access the site is covered by a scratch-off patch.

This is a book that belongs on every clinic shelf. The book invites you to read it and each veterinarian who values his skills as a surgeon should do just that.
