This book will assist the clinician in catching up with the use of minimally invasive surgery. From the early beginnings in the mid 1800’s to the more widely utilized developments in recent years, this is one of the most up-to-date publications. The progress of this technique is chronicled, and the burgeoning use in dogs and cats is well covered. It could have been noted that during the 1970’s and 80’s, several instruments were developed for use in very small birds and exotics that are in use today for general veterinary use.

There are 37 contributors in this volume, representing some of the world’s most experienced dog and cat practitioners. The book is well illustrated with many color photos and drawings, as well as endoscopic views and, radiographs. Video clips are identified by an illustration of an eye next to the relevant text. Instructions to the Website are shown on page xiii.

There are many cases and surgeries illustrating the use of novel instrumentation and surgical assists. There is a chapter on equipment, its use and care, as well as some step-by-step procedures taking the clinician through from beginning to close. The section on suturing techniques is shown with most available instrumentation and a walk-through of tools and surgical progression.

Some of the more recent techniques are explained and illustrated. The use of a specimen retrieval bag is shown in several methods and in detail. One interesting development is that, in addition to the recommended commercial bags on the market, the authors also offer low-cost alternates such as powder less latex glove fingers or condoms.

Anesthesia for laparoscopy, as well as complications and errors are discussed briefly in Chapter 7.

Laparoscopic access to various body parts are illustrated and described in Chapter 8. Working space and patient positioning are illustrated in Chapter 9

Chapter 10 is an important must-read as it prepares he surgeon for contraindications, complications, and limits of laparoscopy.

There are many photos of surgeries with pertinent organs and landmarks printed on the photo in an overlay. These are repeated according to the object being examined. Each section shows necessary instrumentation, positioning, and closing. This makes surgeries easier to follow instead of forcing the reader to skip around from topic to topic. This book should explain how to locate the problem, what tools to use, what landmarks to look for and where to find them, how to repair or remove it, and how to close.

If you are new to this technique, or if you have been using laparoscopy for years, there is something to learn in this book.

The sections on thoracoscopy illustrate many of the same instruments, but differ greatly in surgical techniques and complimentary tools. Approaches to the bronchi and single lung surgery, are illustrated and described as well as other essential surgeries. .

As with laparoscopy, contraindications, complications, and conversions are discussed. In each case, instrumentation placement, ports, patient positioning, and organ identification is thorough.

The chapters do not necessarily follow a prescribed format, so spending some time with this book will be of value by letting you pick up on points of interest that vary from topic to topic.

If you already have a laparoscope or if you are planning on getting one, this book will put you ahead of the pack.
