The field of neurology is one of the more difficult areas of veterinary medicine and requires a logical and systematic approach. This latest edition tackles this complicated issue in three parts, each dedicated to helping to make the diagnosis and treatment a bit more palatable.

Part 1 (Chapters 1-7) deals with emerging diagnostic tests (such as MRI) to enhance the neurological examination. Chapters 1 and 2 concentrate on locating the lesion in the nervous system, the essential aspect of pinpointing the diagnosis. The section also leads the reader by way of rapid access to information to assist in handling an emergency.

The availability of MRI in neurology has made diagnosis more accessible, more expensive, and interpretation of films more complicated. The history-taking process is much more involved, but the book provides a check list to be sure all points are examined. The veterinarian should be able to use this chapter to prepare a history page covering all of the questions mentioned, thereby avoiding having to check them off out of a book in the exam room.

There are photos illustrating various presentations plus descriptions of other factors to observe in making a diagnosis or setting up a preliminary plan of action. There are charts to track disorders and steps to follow through. Cytology views help to determine distemper, lysosomal storage disease and, anaplasmosis. Genetic diseases are described along with tests to determine a positive diagnosis.

Part 2 (Chapters 8-20) delves into Seizures; Coma, Stupor, and Mentation Change; Disorders of the Eyes and Vision; Head Tilt and Nystagmus; Neurological Abnormalities of the head and face; Tremors; Neck and Back Pain; Tetraparesis; Paraparesis; Exercise Tolerance and Collapse; Tail, Anal and Bladder Dysfunction; ending with Neurological Emergencies. As in previous chapters, these conditions are illustrated for identification. The DVD also assists in visualizing an animal with similar signs, an important tool in determining if the animal in your exam room matches the description.

Part 3 (Chapters 21-26) provides a wide range of therapeutics, including Anesthesia and Analgesia, Neurosurgery, Drug Therapy for CNS diseases. Radiation Therapy and Rehabilitation are followed with the use of traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.

The book includes a DVD illustrating additional signs and disease processes. Those include an introduction from the editors, the Neurological Exam; Clinical Pathology; Tissue Biopsy; Seizures; Coma, Stupor and Mentation Change; Disorders of the Eyes and Vision; Head Tilt and Nystagmus; Neurological Abnormalities of the Head and Face; Tremors, Involuntary Movements, and Paroxysmal Disorders

All chapters are well illustrated with examples of what may be seen on presentation as well as drawings, imaging films, and views of affected animals. Photos show examples of a wide variety of presentations and are liberally distributed throughout the book. There are many charts indicated by color and outline. All of these issues are further illuminated in the DVD. The DVD is self-starting and does not require a password for access.

The terminology is British and some drugs may not be available in the US or may be marketed under a different name, so careful attention should be given to drugs and dosages to avoid confusion.
