For the bibliophile and history buff, this is a great read. For the person consumed with writers fever and all things related to veterinary disease processes this book is a historical treasure trove of information. Blancou has amassed information on hundreds of diseases and parasitic conditions both zoonotic and of strict animal origin. Each entry is presented in the following format: Symptomology, Lesions, Aetiology (etiology), Pathogenesis, Epidemiology, Sanitary and Medical Prophylaxis, Treatment, Sanitary Regulations and a conclusion which includes a very concise and complete bibliography as well as other references.

Readers should understand that this book covers the history of such diseases as sheep pox and rabies in an encyclopedic way that examines the diseases from ancient writings to the present. These references offer writers a beautiful listing of available information without spending hours mining the internet or refereed journals. This being said, this book is not one that clinical technicians will use in their daily duties although it may come in handy as a resource for those seeking a deeper understanding of diseases which have plagued animals and to a degree humans since ancient times. For this reason, the reviewer feels that the book garners a 3-star rating. However for those interested in adding a reference dedicated to the historical aspects of diseases – this is a great addition.
