CT and MRI use in medicine began in the 1970’s. It took a while for these methodologies to become common use in veterinary medicine. This volume is directed toward the clinician wishing to become proficient in image-assisted diagnostics. The book provides excellent continuing education by presenting imaging in a cross-sectional format with correlation to other diagnostic tests.

There are over 700 patient-based figures and over 3,000 individual images to compare with most of the common disorders using cross-sectional CT and MRI imaging.

As you open the book there is an instructional page on how to use the book and interpret the images. There is a CT image, followed by an MRI image of the same view, and then a photo of the actual lesion (post-mortem in this instance). The illustrations following in the main text do not necessarily follow that exact format, but they do make comparisons with the actual lesion so the reader can compare the lesion with what it should look like on CT.

Reading CT or MRI images requires skilled concentration and practice in interpreting imaging scans. There are many to study in this book, sorted by body systems. The sections are color coded on the page edges for ease of identification.

The table of Contents is abbreviated in that it lists only the main topics. For example, section 2.1 contains various un-numbered topics: Normal Ventricular System, Hydrocephalus, Congenital Hydrocephalus, Obstructive hydrocephalus, Communicating (non-obstructive) hydrocephalus, Hydrocephalus from CSF overproduction. These sub-topics are not individudally listed in the TOC. This would probably require that the reader take time to go through the book to familiarize ones self with the breadth of topics.

Reading CT or MRI images is a daunting task and involves some serious study and effort. After reading through this book it is plain to see why many clinicians depend on the specialist to interpret imaging scans. Hopefully, this book will improve individual skills and provide instruction to enable some of you to qualify as Diplomates.
