After 22 years of the first edition to this book, the third edition joins the growing and extensive list of BSAVA textbooks. Over 25 ophthalmologists have brought their expertise to contribute to this book in chapters that discuss the ocular exam, diagnostic imaging, laboratory investigation, ophthalmic anesthesia and surgery, ophthalmic drugs, anatomy of the eye, ophthalmic diseases and neuro-ophthalmology. The last chapter contains algorithms to common ophthalmic presentations that the veterinary may see in their clinic. These algorithms are a useful tool when trying to come up with a plan for treatment. I was very impressed with the huge amount of pictures, drawings, U/S, MRI, and CT scans.
With the new chapters added, unfortunately ophthalmology of the rabbit and exotics has been left out of this book. This change now leaves the reader waiting for a BSAVA textbook for ophthalmology in the exotic pet, but for now - don’t get rid of your old edition. The authors goal was to provide the general DVM and the Ophthalmologist a reference guide and to have access to up to the date and new material on eye related procedures and techniques.
I would also add that this book, in true BSAVA style, would be great for Veterinary Students, and Veterinary technicians that are working with Ophthalmology clinics. I have yet to read a BSAVA textbook that has let me down, they are such an important asset to every veterinary library. Therefore, if I could, I would give this book a higher rating then a 5.
