The Welfare of Animals Used in Research: Practice and Ethics is part of the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) series. This reference resource is available in a paperback version of approximately 270 pages. In addition, it is also available in e-book format.
Our colleagues from “across the pond” have created a valuable resource which provides readers with a thorough overview of the many complex animal welfare and ethical issues associated with the use of animals in scientific research. The text is easy to read and understand, well suited for novice and nonscientific readers. It is also very well organized in a logical format, starting with an introduction to the ethical considerations involved with the humane use of animal models for scientific research. I especially enjoyed the sections on harm-benefit analysis. The author also takes the time to make comparisons of policies and principles from various regulatory and oversight agencies throughout the world making the book versatile with universal application. There are numerous cited current references as well that add additional value for the reader. This book would be a great asset to veterinary technicians, especially those who are working in the arena of research animal care.
