Large Animal Medicine for Veterinary Technician was written by Technicians for Technicians to help those wanting to strive for their specialty in large animal medicine. The book contains over 30 contributing authors, and contains over 100 colored photos, CT, nuclear scintigraphy, drawings, and EKGs. Chapters include hospital biosecurity, restraint, history, physical exam, clinical procedures, diagnostic procedures, medical imaging, reproduction and neonatology. The largest chapter covers a huge array of large animal diseases.
I am sure every veterinary technician going through technician training will agree that finding one book that contains all the diseases would be hard to find, and for that the authors have out done themselves. This chapter contains among other topics: cancer, parasites, viruses, and bacterial conditions that affect equine, small ruminants, swine, camelid, and bovine.
Each chapter contains a set of learning objectives, clinical case problems, key terms, and technician tips and is very well laid out. The chapters covering procedures, contains boxes and tables listing supplies needed and well documented photos of the procedure to assist the reader. Additionally there is a website that allows the reader to access power-points of the figures from the book which may be downloaded, review questions and answers, and case studies.
The book has achieved the authors’ goal as a large animal reference to use to study for the VTNE, and the VTS in large animal specialty. I would definitely recommend this book for both Veterinarians and the Veterinary Technicians working with large animals as well as veterinary technician students.
