As someone who loves dictionaries, thesauruses and the like, this pocket-sized, 63-page booklet was instantly on my radar. Standard Abbreviations brought back all the memories of why I loved medical terminology and acronyms; they allow the medical professional to say a lot while writing a little. As mentioned by the authors of both the 2nd and 3rd edition, this is a “living document”, one that will continue to grow as medical & veterinary research continues to discover new conditions. AAHA, the publisher has recognized this and strives to contribute by publishing this updated version of accepted, standardized abbreviations.
The book is broken down into 4 sections: Symbols, Alphabetical by Abbreviation, Alphabetical by Definition and Grading Systems (this section deals with grading of stages of heart failure, grades of heart murmurs, grades of medial luxating patella, myotatic reflexes and body condition scores or BCS). A book heavy on knowledge but ultra-light on fluff or extraneous content those who are trying to write scientific, medically and technically accurate patient medical records will love this book.
For the technician as well as the technician student this is a must have. For the veterinary technician educator, you will want to make this book required reading and of daily usage for your students or at the very least – an additional scholastic resource.
