Clinic Laboratory Animal Medicine is a book that has been designed to introduce the reader to laboratory animal research, especially geared toward caring for and proper handling, laws and regulations as well as species specific techniques that may be used with laboratory animals. Chapters include but are not limited to: Animal Laboratory regulation and policies, facility design, equipment, and quality control. The chapters also address the following common lab animal species:mice, rats, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pig, chinchillas, rabbits, ferrets, and primates.
Each chapter addresses a species with discussions that surround the use, behavior, anatomy, reproduction, husbandry, feeding, handling and restraint, blood collection, drug administration, and diseases related to that specific species. All pictures are in color and quite lovely; there are also charts scattered throughout the book on species specific drug doses. At the end of the chapters the authors provide a list of further reading to acquire more knowledge, and a review with questions to allow readers to test their retention of the books content. The authors have achieved their goal in developing this book as a guide for learning about laboratory animal medicine.
The third edition came with a CD, however this latest edition does not, but has a link to a companion website which contains educational power points, and editable questions and answers based on the chapters.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone (veterinarians, technicians and students) working with small animals in laboratory research, as well as teachers in the veterinary technician/science programs. The website is excellent for using as an additional instructional support to lectures.
