Reproductive Biology and Phylogeny of Snakes is Volume number 9 in a series of books based on the evolutionary history of the snake as a biological organism. The other series of books cover fish, birds, salamanders, frogs, whale and dolphins. Chapters include; a brief overview of the history of reproduction, evolution and taxonomy, and Oogenesis and Early Embryogenesis. The authors go into quite a lot of detail about Viviparity, female and male anatomy, and the reproductive cycles. The book offers the reader an in depth look at the female and male urogenital ducts; the cloaca, proctodaeum, oviducts, sperm storage, to name a few.
Over 30 contributing authors shared their knowledge and expertise within individual chapters. This book is definitely for the hardcore snake breeder and or herpetologist. Unfortunately there are very few colored pictures, mostly black and white pictures, photographs, diagrams and histological samples. The book contains only one page of actual colored snake pictures, and is lacking in full body anatomy pictures with only sections of snakes being shown. Therefore, I would recommend this book to the snake enthusiast, and to the zoologist working with snakes. It may not be that useful to veterinarians or their technicians.
