This is one of those books that will prove to be essential in any veterinary library. Reconstructive surgeries are a challenge at best. The techniques described in this book are illustrated step by step. The photos are clear and detailed. It's not just getting skin over the defect, it's ensuring that the blood supply is intact so that healing will occur and suturing along tension-relieving patterns so that sutures remain in place and do not pull out of the fascia.

Designing skin flaps is more than an art, it is a true science when one considers all of the parameters that must be regarded. Designs are illustrated in this book that will optimize the use of viable skin and make the repair cover as much an area as possible to permit healing. Some cases illustrate injuries, and some address what remains following tumor or cancer removal. Planning ahead for reconstruction will enhance recovery.

The chapter on General reconstructive techniques presents a series of repair patterns to effect closure on seemingly impossible wounds. Much information is presented detailing the steps in suturing, not just stitching it up, but with attention to a gradual, non-stressing pattern that will successfully close a given wound. A variety of wound patterns and body locations are presented that will give the reader a useful roadmap to follow. Not all of the repairs are beautiful, (grafting around the eye or on the face, for example) but in all cases, the wounds are closed. Even degloving of a limb is addressed, with drawings on how to plan and perform the repair. Drain placements are illustrated.

Most of the surgery models are dogs, and some cats are shown.

Repair of the footpads and digits are illustrated, including amputations, and placement of a remaining footpad to facilitate walking.

The book is divided into various body areas, and none are short-cutted, all appear to have substantial instruction for repairs.

This is one book that should have a place in your clinic or hospital. The book should be left out for occasional reading and studying so that when that case comes in the door, you can look like a magician.
