Review by Kathy Lyon Star

Published first in 1994, the second edition was released in 2012. Although this review should have been done earlier, the book deserves a priority on the list of ophthalmology books. It is still greatly relevant and one of the better books for the non-boarded as well as the boarded clinician. Virtually every page has top-quality photos of any issue one might encounter in practice. Normal eyes are illustrated as well as those with pathology. Approximately one-third of the photos are new, and many of the older views are redone with better resolution. Common disorders have also been expanded to show additional photos. Emerging conditions have been added, including (among others) bartonellosis, aspergillosis, Encephalitozoon cuniculi and, Mycobacterium spp.

Each photo also lists diagnosis, signalment, and a description of the pertinent ocular lesion(s). The Table of Contents outlines lesions structurally and lists each figure according to diagnosis. An appendix groups figures by etiology rather than structure. This format enhances the search on several levels. There is also a listing of breed-related eye issues.

For the more (ahem) experienced veterinarians, the Table of Contents is in lovely large print. It is presented in outline form and grouped according to condition of specific area of the eye. There are twelve sections. The initial topics identify the disease and the following subheads define specific aspects of each figure. Some figures may be repeated as they may illustrate more than one condition. The result is that figure numbers are not always in the expected order. There are twelve sections with numerous sub-topics, each liberally illustrated.

The TOC is too extensive to include here, one may find the full list on the Wiley-Blackwell site. All things considered, this book should be included in the veterinarian's library as it may be the best assist for ophthalmology cases.
