Fluid Therapy for Veterinary Technicians and Nurses provides thorough and thoughtful information in all areas of fluid therapy. It is written in a very straight forward and easy to read format without being too basic or in any way simplistic, even for the seasoned vet tech.
The beginning chapters start with the basics such as body water and body water compartments; explaining intra and extra cellular compartments as well as osmosis and electrolytes and their functions. Routes of administration, fluid pumps and tools of administration are covered next. There is also a very well organized and detailed chapter on calculating fluid rates, calculating constant rate infusions (CRI) and fluid additives. This chapter provides formulas for these calculations as well practice problems with a handy question and answer key. Patient monitoring, complications of fluid therapy, fluid types and selections are covered next as well as excellent coverage of parenteral nutrition and blood transfusions.
The end of each chapter contains a chapter summary, test questions, specific nursing considerations and suggestions for further reading. There is a handy answer key at the back of the book for each set of questions. A companion website with power-point presentations as well as questions and answers is available and may be especially helpful to instructors.
This text is specifically geared toward the technician and provides valuable information and insight in providing quality nursing care revolving around fluid therapy. It would also be a great addition as a study guide for both those starting out and those studying for advanced credentialing.
