Dr. Mackessy is a professor of biology at the University of Northern Colorado. He has been published more then fifty times on the topic of venomous reptiles. With the help of world renowned toxinologists, biologists, and biochemists he has assembled this text in hopes of increasing interest in reptiles and their venoms.
The text is divided into four sections:
Section one provides the reader an introduction to reptile toxinology including the difference between venoms and poison and differences based on geography, age, diet, and time of year. Also included is a discussion on the classification of reptiles and their venoms as well as a chapter that delves into venom glands and their function.
The second section is geared towards the enzymes found in reptile venoms and goes into great detail on the biological activity, structure, inhibition, and any therapeutic uses of the venom.
The third section discusses specific toxins contained in some venom while the fourth, and last, section addresses envenomation in Africa, Central America, and America.
While this book has no usefulness in a clinical setting it will be valuable to field researchers, toxicologists, and those treating venom victims in Central America and Africa. With limited usage to veterinarians, technicians and technician educators, this book rates 3 out of 5 stars.
