As a research technician that engages in the art of suturing regularly I was excited to receive this compact book and DVD. I was not disappointed! I cracked open this text, which is able to lie flat with its spiral binding, and began to read its simple and to the point text. The introduction begins with an explanation of what and why sutures are placed as well as the necessary implements used in the process. I was delighted to see crisp and color pictures for every single thing described. The pictures throughout the book are so good the text could be removed completely and you could still learn how to suture like a pro. Chapter 3 helps the trainee select the appropriate suture for their patient, discussing size, composition and manufacturer recommendations while Chapter 4 and 5 is where the real action begins with step-by-step descriptions and pictures for every throw. The authors were clever in not only their use of pictures of placing sutures, but also a two-toned rope so one can clearly see the cross overs and how knots are formed. The authors further proved their brilliance by discussing suturing of exotics species, including amphibians, fish and birds as found in chapter 7.
The DVD component is not necessarily needed, but definitely adds to the text with demonstrations of each suture pattern discussed. I thought the clarity of the DVD while watching was a bit grainy, but it did not inhibit my ability to follow or learn the technique. It is possible the quality-related issue was just my DVD player and not necessarily the disc itself.
I highly recommend this book to any veterinary professional, not just lab animal veterinary technicians. It certainly will be used in suture technique classes I teach from here on out!
