An Illustrated Guide to Animal Science Terminology gives the reader an opportunity to explore what it would be like to work in the animal field. Chapters in this book go over basic animal science, anatomy, husbandry, genetics, and different types of species and breeds. Each chapter contains terminology common to each topic discussed, and some of the terms contain how to properly pronounce the word. This makes it helpful to when using these words properly. At the end of each chapter there is a list of questions. One chapter of note is that which addresses animal genetics and breeding. This chapter provides the reader with detailed pictures on cell division by mitosis, and a large list of terminology related to genetics, something that would be helpful to those in need of an explanation for a biology class on the topic of cell division.
The authors’ goal throughout this book was to be able to give the reader an extensive list of animal related vocabulary and to encourage animal science learning. Unfortunately the title of this book is misleading; the book contains terminology, but is mostly geared toward the large animal veterinarian and farmer. There is a small chapter on canines and felines, but the chapters mainly just contain the different breeds. For someone that has no experience with large animals, there are many pictures and discussions within this book about various types of cattle breeds and other livestock; this may prove useful for the novice.
I would recommend this book to the veterinary technician student looking for help in their large animal studies. The book also comes with a CD which contains all the terminology that is listed in the book with audio. You can learn how to properly pronounce the word, something that may be helpful in studying medical terminology at a collegiate level.
