As someone who has taught medical terminology for seven years, I am constantly on the lookout for the next “best approach” to teaching a subject that I have come to think of as a “language” to be learned much as Spanish or French. Romich has presented the veterinary technician educators community with perhaps her best effort to date. Part of the appeal is in the engaging visuals presented within this book which remains colorful and stuffed with choices for the educators on how to present the information. Each chapter of which there are twenty-three ends with multiple choice, puzzles, fill-in-the-blank, matching and labeling exercises. As an educator, the exercises which average ten pages per chapter not only provide ready-made homework assignments but also will jump start ones test writing activities. As if that isn’t a gift, there is also an Instructors Companion Website with presentations and testing prompts. Because Dr. Romich is a recognized “Distinguished Teacher Award” recipient for her work in the use of technology in the classroom, you can expect a stellar product to enhance your teaching activities.
The book is broken down a bit differently in terms of chapter topics with engaging tests that are sure to grab your student’s attention and make studying fun. With titles such as “Meat and Bones”, “Head to Toe” and “Gut Instinct” who would not want to crack open their textbook. The chapters are well written and supported with pictures, drawings, radiographs, and microscopic images nodding heavily towards the use of terminology in such areas as surgery, anatomy, physiology, large animal medicine and animal treatment to name a few. As all of these areas generally require students to have completed (as a pre-requisite) medical terminology, the book’s organization can allow instructors to teach terminology in such a way as to give the student a distinct advantage when they move on to these other aforementioned courses. For these reasons, the book is a resounding 5 out of 5 star rating and heading for my classroom in Fall 2014.
