This is the first edition of this title and is an excellent introduction to oncology. It explains all aspects of oncology in an easy to understand manner. It does not go into great detail, which is one of the reasons it is easy to comprehend.

The text covers such topics as working up the patient, cytology and pathology, as well as types of treatments including radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. It then goes into emergencies, cancer pain, and nutrition. Coverage of tumors is organized by location and the system involved. There are multiple pictures and drawings to help illustrate points made by the author. Another aspect of this text that stands out is the addition of numerous tables. These are easy to read and provide a large amount of information on topics such as medications, emergencies, treatments, and various syndromes which one may expect to see in relation to oncological conditions. There is a companion web site available that provides case studies. However, the code provided in the text was not valid and I was unable to access the site (this may be as a result of the book being a “review” copy).

This is a great resource for veterinary students, practicing clinicians who desire basic information on oncology, veterinary technicians working in oncology, or anyone looking for a good introduction to the subject. Once it is in your clinic it won’t spend much time on the bookshelf!
