When one sees “Slatters” as part of the title, you know you are in good hands. Of course this held true for this 5th edition text with its glossy and catchy hardcover, 506 high quality pages with color everything! The book has 20 chapters as well as an appendix for breed predisposition to eye disorders and a glossary for clarification of any term one might have forgotten. Chapter one starts out this gorgeous book with the basic structure and function of the eye, accompanied by side by side visuals of what a normal eye may see as well as what a sick or injured eye may see, giving good perspective into patient quality of life. Moving down a few chapters we come to the eye exam and what should be covered during an ophthalmic exam. This chapter has an ophthalmology exam flow sheet that will help assist in the examination process and makes sure all your bases are covered.
I really can’t speak enough about the brilliant and excellent photo and graphics quality. The surgical approaches and techniques are well depicted, aiding the less than well-versed veterinarian in an eye surgery. Chapter 19 is of particular interest, covering ocular emergencies and giving pointers as to when a trip to a specialist might be indicated to prevent permanent damage to the patients’ eye. The book aids in the decision when to refer.
In general the multiple helpful charts help the practitioner with diagnoses and a more thorough understanding of ophthalmic conditions. For veterinary technicians, the ability to have a text that allows them to thoroughly understand the diseases, treatments, conditions, and needs of the patient as well as equipment set up, client communication, patient care, and more. I give this text 5 out of 5 stars for its detailed coverage of eyes conditions and treatment options, as well as the brilliant photos and charts which are useful to both technicians as well as clinicians who are involved in ophthalmics.
