I generally expect greatness when I see literature or texts come out of AAHA press and I was not disappointed. It is nice to see a book that is dedicated to veterinary technicians as well as written by two highly respected exotic animal veterinarians, Dr. Tully and Dr. Mitchell. The book is broken down into eight chapters, starting with birds moving to reptiles/amphibians and then moving further down evolutionary development to mammals. Although it would be interesting if fish came next in the evolutionary chain, the book ends with an interesting chapter on our gilled aquatic friends, oftentimes left out of texts altogether. It would be an injustice to not mention the quality of the photographs and line drawings in the book, as they are all on color! How often are we spoiled like this? The content of the pictures are well chosen, showing common medical conditions and techniques for various species, helping less familiar veterinary technicians visualize a procedure more appropriately and allow both veterinary technician and veterinary students more thorough understanding of such principles.
Within each chapter the authors give all the basics as to the care and treatment of the exotic animals. Each chapter starts with the taxonomy of the patient; often somewhat difficult with such a diversity of species. Husbandry with a nutritional component is also covered, followed by ways to transport and restrain the pets. Midway through each chapter is a section covering the methods used in the completion of a full physical exam, diagnostic sampling methods, and recommendations. Also covered in the physical exam portions, is a brief on parasitology and radiographs as a diagnostic tool. Adding to the completeness of the book are sections dedicated to surgical nursing and anesthetic preparation and monitoring; therapeutic and infectious diseases are not left out, but concisely covered as relates to exotic animals.
Written and marketed for the veterinary technician it is with great enthusiasm I encourage having this book around the clinic or in a personal library. With this said I give the book 4 out of 5 stars for attention to detail, not only in the information, but the formatting and excellent pictures and figures it contains.
