Management of Pregnant and Neonatal Dogs, Cats, and Exotic Pets

VSPN Review by Stephen Cital, RVT, SRA Star

This modest sized, soft cover book is crammed full of everything you may want to know about our pregnant and neonate patients. It is exciting to have a book overseen by one of the limited Diplomats in Theriogenology in the United States making the book even more credible. All eighteen chapters are chock full of discernible information for quick reference. References for each chapter are listed at the end of the chapter for further reading. The book is filled with black and white photos in context, as well as a color photo section after chapter 4 for better visualization. The most pleasant surprise is the addition of exotic mammal management. All too often questions arise surrounding exotic animal breeding, pregnancy and neonate husbandry that stump even the most seasoned small animal veterinarian and veterinary technician. With this book those questions will be answered.

I certainly had the pleasure of learning new information regarding neonate care and best practices as well as being refreshed on care and management of the pregnant pet. In chapter 5 the all-important fetal assessment, a seemingly obscure skill for many practices, is covered and enhanced by photos of ultrasounds with detailed descriptions as well as formulas for calculating gestational age. One of the most helpful chapters is chapter 11 with its easy to interpret charts covering antibiotics and potential harmful effects on fetuses. This chapter also has extensive charts on breed specific genetic disorders and diseases veterinarians should caution owners about. This book is ideal for any practice, especially ones that may serve large numbers of pet breeders.

The suggested retail price is my main reasoning for a score of four out of five stars.
