This book published by AAHA Press is one of 5 books included in the Practice Ownership Series all of which deal with the financial exploration and implications of owning ones’ own veterinary practice. As a co-founder of Summit Veterinary Advisors and a licensed CPA, Monheiser-List is more than qualified to advise and discuss the various decisions that come out of the desire to either own or partly own a veterinary practice. In the case of Associate Buy-Ins, the information presented would be useful to a clinician hoping to “buy-in” to an established practice as an established practitioner begins the transition to retirement. The book addresses both partial and total buy-ins as options for a practitioner to own their own business.
The text is developed in a question and answer format that delves into some of the most commonly asked questions concerning preparation and carrying out of a practice purchase. Written in easy to understand language with very little legalese to muddy the reader’s perception, the book is a nice resource. However, the book is written regarding the veterinarian-clinician-practitioner as the intended audience and therefore has little use in the scope of a veterinary technician or other staff training or need to know. The exception to this would be the veterinary technician purchasing a practice. An additional scenario for a veterinary technician or other staff member might be as a citation of research for a paper or if s/he is married to a veterinarian moving down the pathway to practice ownership. Therefore a 3 out of 5 rating is in order based on need and usefulness to the average veterinary technician or staff member.
